Anna Hempstead Branch, the younger of two children, was born at Hempstead House in New London, Connecticut, where her mother's family, the Hempsteads, had lived since 1640. Her father was a New York lawyer; her mother wrote popular children's stories and poems. Following Branch's graduation from Smith College in 1897, she studied dramaturgy at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, training which is reflected in her numerous verse plays and dramatic monologues.
Branch was connected with a number of philanthropic, social work, and art organizations, but most of her time was divided between the Christodora House, a lower east side settlement house, and Hempstead House, where she lived with her mother. At Christodora, Branch established and directed the activities of the Poet's Guild, an association organized to bring poetry to the neighborhood, especially the children, but which also provided occasions for such poets as Edwin Arlington Robinson, Vachel Lindsay, Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, Sara Teasdale, Ridgely Torrence, Margaret Widdemer, and Branch herself to read and discuss poetry.

Anna Hempstead Branch (March 18, 1875 – September 8, 1937)[1] was an American poet. She was regarded as a major poet during her life,[1] labeled by William Thomas Stead "the Browning of American poetry".[2]
Early life
[edit]Branch was born at Hempsted House in New London, Connecticut in 1875, the younger child of John Locke Branch, a lawyer, and Mary Lydia Bolles Branch (1840–1922), a children's author and poet who was part of Hempstead family, who had lived in the area since 1640 and owned some of the oldest houses in southeast Connecticut.[3]
Education
[edit]Branch spent most of her school years in New York and Brooklyn where she studied at Smith College, as well as Froebel and Adelphi Academies, which were near her father's law practice.[4] After graduating from Smith College in 1897, she studied dramaturgy at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, earning her degree in 1900.[1][5] A year after graduating from Smith, her poem "The Road 'Twixt Heaven and Hell" was selected as the year's best verse by a college graduate by Century Magazine.[4] Starting with that recognition, Branch regularly placed her poetry in a variety of national magazines, a
